Daylighting Information

"We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy — sun, wind and tide. ... I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that."  Thomas A. Edison

To understand the benefits and effects that skylights can have on a building, the Heschong Mahone Group has created a simple-to-use spreadsheet program that is widely used to determine energy and cost savings. By entering some basic information including the glazing systems, building design, and geographical location of the building, SkyCalc will calculate and graph the overall energy and cost savings for lighting, heating and cooling. In determining the results that Skycalc produces, it considers a variety of effects that skylights have on the building energy consumption. Detailed information can be found in the Skycalc’s User’s Guide. The Skycalc program and User’s Guide can be found in the “Download” section of the Heschong Mahone Group, Inc. website.
